Excited muons are sought in the channel pp → µµ∗ → µµ jet jet, assuming both the production and decay occur via a contact interaction. The analysis is based on 20.3 fb−1 of pp collision data at a centre-of-mass energy of √ s = 8 TeV taken with the ATLAS detector at the Large Hadron Collider. No evidence of excited muons is found, and limits are set at the 95% confidence level on the cross section times branching ratio as a function of the excited-muon mass mµ ∗ . For mµ ∗ between 1.3 TeV and 3.0 TeV, the upper limit on σB(µ ∗ → µqq¯) is between 0.6 and 1 fb. Limits on σB are converted to lower bounds on the compositeness scale Λ. In the limiting case Λ = mµ ∗ , excited muons with a mass below 2.8 TeV are excluded. With the same model assumptions, these limits at larger µ ∗ masses improve upon previous limits from traditional searches based on the gauge-mediated decay µ ∗ → µγ

Here, the differences in the pseudorapidity (Δη) and azimuthal (Δφ) measurements are used to extract the shape of the near-side peak formed by particles associated with a higher pT trigger particle (1 < p T,trig < 8 GeV/c). A combined fit of the near-side peak and long-range correlations is applied to the data allowing the extraction of the centrality evolution of the peak shape in Pb-Pb collisions at √ sNN=2.76 TeV. A significant broadening of the peak in the Δη direction at low pT is found from peripheral to central collisions, which vanishes above 4 GeV/c, while in the Δφ direction the peak is almost independent of centrality. For the 10% most central collisions and 1 < p T,assoc < 2 GeV/c, 1 < p T,trig < 3 GeV/c a novel feature is observed: a depletion develops around the center of the peak. Our results are compared to pp collisions at the same center of mass energy and ampt model simulations. The comparison to the investigated models suggests that the broadening and the development of themore » depletion is connected to the strength of radial and longitudinal flow.« less

This novel method is robust against systematic biases originating from nonflow effects and by construction any dependence on symmetry planes is eliminated. We demonstrate that correlations of flow harmonics exhibit a better sensitivity to medium properties than the individual flow harmonics. The new measurements are performed in Pb-Pb collisions at the center-of-mass energy per nucleon pair of root S-NN = 2.76 TeV by the ALICE experiment at the Large Hadron Collider. The centrality dependence of correlation between event-by-event fluctuations of the elliptic upsilon 2 and quadrangular upsilon 4 flow harmonics, as well as of anticorrelation between upsilon 2 and triangular upsilon 3 flow harmonics are presented. The results cover two different regimes of the initial state configurations: geometry dominated (in midcentral collisions) and fluctuation dominated (in the most central collisions). Comparisons are made to predictions from Monte Carlo Glauber, viscous hydrodynamics, AMPT, and HIJING models. Together with the existing measurements of the individual flow harmonics the presented results provide further constraints on the initial conditions and the transport properties of the system produced in heavy-ion collisions.

Significant long-range “ridge-like” correlations are observed for pairs with small relative azimuthal angle (|∆ φ| < π/ 3) and back-to-back pairs (|∆ φ| > 2π/ 3) over the transverse momentum range 0 . 4 < p T < 12 GeV and in different intervals of event activity. The event activity is defined by either the number of reconstructed tracks or the total transverse energy on the Pb-fragmentation side. The azimuthal structure of such long-range correlations is Fourier decomposed to obtain the harmonics v n as a function of p T and event activity. The extracted v n values for n = 2 to 5 decrease with n. The v 2 and v 3 values are found to be positive in the measured p T range. The v 1 is also measured as a function of p T and is observed to change sign around p T ≈ 1 . 5–2.0 GeV and then increase to about 0.1 for p T > 4 GeV. The v 2 ( p T ) , v 3 ( p T ) and v 4 ( p T ) are compared to the v n coefficients in Pb+Pb collisions at √ sNN = 2 .76 TeV with similar event multiplicities. Reasonable agreement is observed after accounting for the difference in the average p T of particles produced in the two collision systems.

This Letter presents a measurement of the charge asymmetry in events where the top-quark pair is produced with a large invariant mass. The analysis is performed on 20.3 fb−1 of pp collision data at √s = 8 TeV collected by the ATLAS experiment at the LHC, using reconstruction techniques specifically designed for the decay topology of highly boosted top quarks. The charge asymmetry in a fiducial region with large invariant mass of the top-quark pair (mtt¯ > 0.75 TeV) and an absolute rapidity difference of the top and anti-top quark candidates within −2 < |yt| − |yt¯| < 2 is measured to be 4.2 ± 3.2%, in agreement with the Standard Model prediction at next-to-leading order. A differential measurement in three tt¯ mass bins is also presented.

The transverse momentum (pT) distributions were studied at mid-rapidity (|y| < 0.5) in the range of 0.6 < pT < 8.5 GeV/c for Ξ− and Ξ+ baryons, and in the range of 0.8 < pT < 5 GeV/c for Ω− and Ω+. Baryons and antibaryons were measured as separate particles and we find that the baryon to antibaryon ratio of both particle species is consistent with unity over the entire range of the measurement. The statistical precision of the current data has allowed us to measure a difference between the mean pT of Ξ− (Ξ+) and Ω− (Ω+). Particle yields, mean pT, and the spectra in the intermediate pT range are not well described by the PYTHIA Perugia 2011 tune Monte Carlo event generator, which has been tuned to reproduce the early LHC data. The discrepancy is largest for Ω− (Ω+). This PYTHIA tune approaches the pT spectra of Ξ− and Ξ+ baryons below pT < 0.85 GeV/c and describes the Ξ− and Ξ+ spectra above pT > 6.0 GeV/c. We also illustrate the difference between the experimental data and model by comparing the corresponding ratios of (Ω− + Ω+)/(Ξ− + Ξ+) as a function of transverse mass.
- ItemOpen AccessSearch for new phenomena in dijet mass and angular distributions from pp collisions at √s = 13 TeV with the ATLAS detector(2016) Aad, G; Abbott, B; Abdallah, J; Abdinov, O; Abeloos, B; Aben, R; Abolins, M; AbouZeid, O S; Abramowicz, H; Abreu, H; Abreu, R; Abulaiti, Y; Acharya, B S; Adamczyk, L; Adams, D L; Adelman, J; Adomeit, S; Adye, T; Affolder, A A; Agatonovic-Jovin, T; Agricola, J; Aguilar-Saavedra, J A; Ahlen, S P; Ahmadov, F; Aielli, G; Akerstedt, H; Åkesson, T P A; Akimov, A V; Alberghi, G L; Albert, J; Albrand, S; Alconada Verzini, M JThis Letter describes a model-agnostic search for pairs of jets (dijets) produced by resonant and non-resonant phenomena beyond the Standard Model in 3.6 fb−1 of proton–proton collisions with a centre-of-mass energy of √s = 13 TeV recorded by the ATLAS detector at the Large Hadron Collider. The distribution of the invariant mass of the two leading jets is examined for local excesses above a data-derived estimate of the smoothly falling prediction of the Standard Model. The data are also compared to a Monte Carlo simulation of Standard Model angular distributions derived from the rapidity of the two jets. No evidence of anomalous phenomena is observed in the data, which are used to exclude, at 95% CL, quantum black holes with threshold masses below 8.3 TeV, 8.1 TeV, or 5.1 TeV in three different benchmark scenarios; resonance masses below 5.2 TeV for excited quarks, 2.6 TeV in a W model, a range of masses starting from mZ = 1.5 TeV and couplings from gq = 0.2 in a Z model; and contact interactions with a compositeness scale below 12.0 TeV and 17.5 TeV respectively for destructive and constructive interference between the new interaction and QCD processes. These results significantly extend the ATLAS limits obtained from 8 TeV data. Gaussian-shaped contributions to the mass distribution are also excluded if the effective cross-section exceeds values ranging from approximately 50–300 fb for masses below 2 TeV to 2–20 fb for masses above 4 TeV.
